Her Spirit 50:50 What is Possible Podcast
Judy Murray OBE talks to Annie and Louise about life on the tennis circuit, being the mum of Andy and Jamie. And her work as a tennis coach and getting the best out of everyone she works with.
In this 1st episode of season 3 of the Her Spirit podcast BBC Breakfast presenter Louise Minchin and BBC Triathlon presenter Annie Emmerson talk to Judy Murray OBE.
Named as the "The mother of tennis" Judy started playing tennis at aged 10 and played tennis internationally and won 64 Scottish titles. In 1995, she qualified as a coach and went on to initiate the Scottish Development School programme, which produced champion players including her sons, Jamie and Andy.
At the age of 19, Judy trained as a tennis coach - something she’d become grateful for in 1994, after she became a full-time coach and initial trainer for her sons Andy and Jamie. In 2011. As a testament to her coaching ability, Judy was chosen to lead the British Fed Cup team as their captain. Judy flourished in this role, but she also had another incentive - to raise awareness of female coaches. Commonly unrepresented, Judy tackled sexism in sports head-on by proving that female tennis coaches are just as capable as male coaches.
Judy become a household name when she competed on hit BBC1 show Strictly Come Dancing in 2014, partnering king of the ballroom Anton Du Beke.
Judy's mantra is "If you tell me I can't do something, I will go out of my way to prove you wrong" and we love her comments about people "Its not about what you have, but what you do with what you have and if you surround yourself with good people and you all work together you have no idea what can happen"
In recognition of her contribution to tennis, female empowerment and charity fundraising, Judy was appointed an OBE in 2017. An advocate for the power of sport, she founded the Judy Murray Foundation, a charity that improves the opportunities for tennis in Scotland.
Judy loves the mental challenge and her 3 key coaching questions are, How do you cause trouble? How do you avoid trouble? and how do you get you out of trouble? She is facilitated about getting the best out of anyone she works with and improve to get the best out of them.
Known as a disruptor and friend of the likes of Billy Jean King she has a passion for equality.
